Anonymous asked: Hi! I was just wondering what type of music you are into. I'm always looking for new stuff to listen to. Your blog is amazing, by the way!
Thanks so much! Like most people, I listen to a very wide variety of music. I like folkier-ish stuff like Neil Young, Bob Dylan, Ryan Adams, Avett Brothers, Paul Curreri, Lucero, Rufus Wainwright, Old Crow Medicine Show, Nickel Creek and Cory Brannan. I also really like pretty girly music like Joanna Newsom, Blonde Redhead, Frou Frou, The Blow, Metric, A Fine Frenzy, Regina Spektor, Submarines, St. Vincent, Azure Ray and Jenny Lewis. Those are some of my favorite singers. I also like some “older” stuff like The Beatles (duh), Rolling Stones, CCR, Fleetwood Mac, Mungo Jerry, Tom Petty (is he “old” music?), Roy Orbison, Johnny Cash and Sam Cooke. We also just listen to a ton of indie and rock music. Elliott Smith is one of my favorite musicians. Lately I’ve been listening to Tune-Yards, Foster the People, Young the Giant, Cage the Elephant, The Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon (always, I don’t care how cheesy-Southern-Rock-y they get), Silversun Pickups, Arcade Fire, Vampire Weekend, etc, etc. Everything out there. All kinds of different stuff, haha, but I tried to categorize it…badly…
I know what I can’t get into—singers that wear dumb costumes, dye their hair unnatural colors, wear wigs, diapers, gold plated breast plates, and do other idiotic stuff just to get attention or because someone told them to. I do think music and visual arts have a special place for connection together. It’s called theater. That’s all those people are—acts. Actors. They’re not musicians. (If you see things differently that’s good, too. You just got to like whatever moves you. If you’re moved by stupid hair and costumes and fireworks and cheesy lyrics about bikinis written by groups of old business men, then so be it. Sometimes the hilarity of it all can be alluring. This is just my opinion). I’ll get off my high horse now and admit that the Super Bowl halftime show was a spectacle that I’m glad I didn’t miss.
